Following the release of Gotham it seems DC are looking to go back to the roots of their other cape-wearing icon, as Syfy announce Krypton. Set on the planet of Superman’s birth, this takes place when Smallville was just a smattering of particles in the ether and focuses on Jor-El’s grandfather. As you may recall the setting was depicted in the Christopher Reeve movies as a land of crystals and stuffy politicians, and the storyline – developed by BATMAN V.SUPERMAN’s David S.Goyer and Once Upon A Time‘s Ian Goldberg – appears to follow a more serious template than simple flying about and rescuing attractive journalists.
The whole point of Superman is that he is an exceptional figure amongst mortals, so how a drama located on a world chock full of Kryptonians will play out remains to be seen. Nevertheless, this is the latest in a trend for comic book shows that think outside the box, with the focus taken away from tight costumes and more towards the events that surround and lead up to the antics of our much-loved heroes.
