Deadline has just released the first image of Jake Gyllenhaal in SOUTHPAW, the upcoming Antoine Fuqua directed film in which he plays boxer Billy “The Great” Hope. The above image shows a huge transformation from the gangly video journalist Lou Bloom that Gyllenhaal lost 25 pounds to play in this year’s superb stand-out NIGHTCRAWLER (below).
For SOUTHPAW, the actor gained a huge 15 pounds of pure muscle for the role, which can clearly be seen in the image above. The film revolves around Gyllenhaal’s Hop, a skilled fighter whose personal life implodes after a tragedy.
Naomie Harris, Rachel McAdams, Rita Ora, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson and Forest Whittaker also star in the movie, which is due in cinemas next year. Kurt Sutter (Sons Of Anarchy) wrote the screenplay.
