INDEPENDENCE DAY is getting a sequel after 20th Century Fox gave it the official greenlight yesterday. Roland Emmerich is returning to direct for the studio, and wrote the first draft of the screenplay. We are hearing that the film will not star Will Smith, and at this stage we don’t have any news as to who will assume the lead, or any other roles in said sequel. We do know that frequent Emmerich collaborator Dean Devlin will return to produce.
The film will be a single stand-alone movie, rather than two sequels shot back-to-back, though no storylines have been released at this stage.
The original was released all of the way back in 1996, and made a whopping $817 million worldwide. Strange we haven’t had a sequel in the works officially until now really.
Shooting kicks off on the sci-fi sequel in May, 2015 for a release on June 24th 2016. More news as we get it.
