If the prospect of Jennifer Lawrence reteaming with director David O.Russell to make a movie about the inventor of a mop isn’t enough to at least pique your interest, then the producers of JOY have another incentive – Robert De Niro is in the frame to play Lawrence’s father. The veteran method legend and serial snuffler has also experienced the O.Russell treatment, previously appearing in SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK.
JOY concerns Joy Mangano, who created the oft-squeegee’d cleaning tool the Miracle Mop. I’m not sure how to describe this further without turning the article into an advert, but clearly O.Russell sees celluloid potential in her story, and having Lawrence signed up can’t hurt his chances. The addition of Annie BRIDESMAIDS Mumolo as screenwriter suggests we have a comedic bent to proceedings and bearing in mind Mangano’s history on the Home Shopping Network this could beome a hilarious treat… having said that, you never quite know with Russell.
As for De Niro, well, with his friends Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel advertising satellite TV and home insurance in the UK, it’s only a matter of time before he’s lured to our shores by a juicy paycheque. So before my nightmare of him taking over from Lenny Henry as the face of Premier Inn comes true (“Are you stayin’ with me…? Are you stayin’ with me? I don’t see anyone else stayin’ here…”) he’d better get some credible material under his belt. The film commences production early next year.
