Visionary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick immortalized the works of Arthur C.Clarke in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. It was a tough act to follow, but if one man can attempt it it’s stylist par excellence Ridley Scott, whose Scott Free production company is to make a miniseries from 3001: The Final Odyssey. Clarke’s 1997 novel brought to a close the epic saga of monoliths and transcendence, revealing the fate of 2001 character Frank Poole. Poole was famously cast adrift into space by definitive machine megalomaniac HAL.
Directors have been understandably cautious about following in Kubrick’s footsteps, with only Peter Hyams taking up the challenge with 2010. While it’s unclear if Scott will be stepping behind the camera for the new series, he’d be as insane as a bone-wielding neanderthal not to at least consider it. Stuart Beattie is adapting the book and Warner Horizon TV are co-producing.
