‘Sinister Six’ To Reboot ‘Spider-Man’ And Possibly Return To Marvel?

Spider-Man

Somewhere in the world right now, Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi are sipping cocktails and laughing gleefully to pleasant memories of the early noughties as Sony watch their once prized franchise slowly burn to the ground.

This time last year, many (including myself) believed that Sony’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 would be the movie to finally break the web-slinging superhero franchise into billion dollar territory to rival that of Marvel Studios. However, flashforward to now and the future of Peter Parker’s big screen adventures looks more uncertain than ever. Despite the fact that Marc Webb had cast Academy Award winning actor Jamie Foxx as his main antagonist and terrifically talented newcomer Dane DeHaan as his new Harry Osborn, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 still couldn’t be saved from old pitfalls. Unfortunately, the big budget sequel repeated the mistakes of SPIDER-MAN 3 (albeit without any jazz clubs or silly dancing) and overinflated the film until its narrative could no longer contain its multiple plot threads. This lead to a hugely disappointing box office haul of just over $700 Million worldwide, which failed to top the final tally of its competing Marvel movies CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

This is extremely disappointing as I have made no secret of the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, despite its painfully obvious issues regarding pacing and character development. Now, it seems that there is more troubling news for fans of the SPIDER-MAN movie franchise as it currently stands (although it could be a blessing in disguise depending on your outlook on the situation). A new report claims that following the critical failure of Webb’s super-sized sequel, Sony are considering rebooting the franchise again through their upcoming SINISTER SIX spin-off film. The villain-centric side-story is rumoured to be a ‘soft reboot’ of the series which will feature an all new actor playing Spider-Man once again. This hypothetical reboot would team-up the all new wall-crawler with the Sinister Six, in order to take down a larger threat in a DIRTY DOZEN-style storyline.

Having said that, this news is far from confirmed and a completely separate report (from an equally reliable source) is also claiming that Sony are negotiating with Marvel Studios for some sort of crossover. You can check out a quote from the report below:

‘While I can’t get the confirmations I need to verify the story, I’m hearing that there are some very cool “Spider-Man” plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds. Will it work out? I don’t know. I would love to be able to state for sure that it’s happening. What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again’.

Whatever the case, Sony are clearly very confused about the future of  the big screen SPIDER-MAN franchise and it’s looking like they are clutching at straws now (the site also mentions that the VENOM film is now dead). Either way, it would be every fanboys dream to have Peter Parker finally team-up with THE AVENGERS, and it looks like that may very well be close to happening. However, it would be a shame to lose Andrew Garfield from the series…although some fans may call it a worthy sacrifice to have Marvel Studios reclaim some sort of ownership over the character at last.

On another note, there’s no word on which villains will feature in the SINISTER SIX and whether or not previous actors from the series will return. It certainly would be a massive disappointment if Dane DeHaan didn’t reprise his fantastic role as Harry Osborn, as the CHRONICLE star was easily the best part of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.

SINISTER SIX will (hopefully) hit theatres November 11th 2016.
