David Schwimmer To Be A Friend To Matt LeBlanc In ‘Episodes’

Friends Television Stills

Larry David recently rewrote the rulebook on TV reunions when he staged a comeback for Seinfeld within Curb Your Enthusiasm. That idea seems to have rubbed off on the Friends personnel – ironic really, as David has accused them of plundering his sitcom in the past. With the 20th anniversary of the mates-based smash in peoples’ minds we’ve seen Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Lisa Kudrow reconvene on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Now David Schwimmer has reportedly signed up to appear as himself in Episodes. The fish-out-of-water BBC comedy, created by the Friends team of David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik and starring Matt LeBlanc, is entering its fourth series and it seems they are celebrating the Big Two Oh by getting Schwimmer back to reminisce about Ross.

The source for this sensational story? Erm, The Sun. But it’s a likely bet that Schwimmer would be amenable to the idea. He’s turned to directing since the mega-sitcom ended, most notably helming RUN FATBOY RUN with Simon Pegg. He also featured as himself in… you’ve guessed it… Curb. In addition he is a fan of Brit comedy, having directed some of Little Britain USA. So while the sixsome that captured the hearts of a generation have nixed a full return to the screen, fans at least have something to watch thanks to enterprising producers.

As far as my ten pence goes, the longevity of Episodes has long been a mystery. Perpetually low ratings don’t seem to have dented the BBC’s desire to make multiple seasons. While to me it’s all a bit cliquey and sterile, it should at least be entertaining to see what approach they take if Schwimmer does indeed make a comeback.
