X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST was the smash hit superhero blockbuster 20th Century Fox had been aiming to produce for years. The film was a reunion for the cast and crew of the original series which brought back Bryan Singer as its director and Hugh Jackman as its star. This proved to be a fantastic decision on Fox’s part, which elevated the franchise to new heights. As a result, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST received mass critical acclaim and became 2014’s highest grossing Comic Book movie with almost $750 Million worldwide.
Singer’s time travelling epic re-wrote a large chunk of the X-MEN continuity, which means that the next instalment in the series has a relatively blank canvas to work from. We have known for quite some time that X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is due to hit theatres in May 2016, however now things are beginning to fall into place for the film. Bryan Singer has long been expected to return as the sequel’s director for his fourth outing with the Marvel Mutants, but now it has been officially confirmed. After X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST proved to be a goldmine for the studio, it seemed like a no-brainer for Fox to bring Singer back for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. The report also offers a short synopsis confirming many of our existing suspicions based on previous hints and interviews. Check it out below:
‘Apocalypse takes place a decade after Days of Future Past and is a seamless next step in the story. The altering of time has unleashed a new and uniquely powerful enemy. Charles (James McAvoy), Erik/Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Hank/Beast (Nicholas Hoult) are joined by young Cyclops, Storm, Jean and others as the X-Men must fight their most formidable foe yet: an ancient unrelenting force determined to cause an apocalypse unlike any in human history’.
If true, then Hugh Jackman will seemingly return to play Wolverine once again as has been widely expected. This comes as a huge delight but little surprise given that Jackman is rumoured to be capping off his time as the clawed mutant with a back-to-back shoot of X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and the currently untitled sequel to THE WOLVERINE. It’s also great to hear that Singer will once again steer the franchise he began 14 years ago, as the series clearly requires him to progress in an exciting and meaningful manner (for the moment).
Expect casting news and further plot details to follow in the coming months, with the film due to shoot early next year. In the mean time check back with THN for more news on X-MEN: APOCALYPSE!
