20th Century Fox’s THE MAZE RUNNER has made a ton of money in the North American territories this weekend. $32.5 million to be exact. Add to that an additional $37 million from international territories (it doesn’t open in the UK until October), and you’ve got the Fox executives rubbing their hands together at thoughts of a sequel. When the news broke this evening that the film had beaten A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES and THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU to the number one position in the American chart, Fox immediately put out a release via Variety that a sequel had been greenlighted, and it will arrive pretty quickly: in September of next year.
The trade reports that THE MAZE RUNNER: SCORCH TRIALS will see the light of day, or rather the inside of a dark auditorium, on September 18th, 2015; exactly one year from now. The first film is already in profit with a ton of foreign territories still to go, and with another book in the series from James Dashner waiting to go called ‘The Death Cure,” be assured of Fox plotting an adaptation of that for, we presume, the following year.
No news on stars or director for the second film, but we’ll fill you in as we learn any more.
THE MAZE RUNNER is released in the UK on 10th October, 2014.
Update: Fox have just released our first look at the concept art for the sequel, which you can see below. Looks as if they’ve been confident about the film for some time.
