Stallone Pushes Rambo One More Time For ‘Last Blood’

Rambo.

John Rambo is the toughest guy in the residential care home. But when a group of Viet Cong veterans move into the room next door the stage is set for a brutal showdown involving oversharpened bingo pencils, Steradent and a converted zimmerframe.

Only joking. However Sylvester Stallone is to give his leathery freedom fighter a final airing in LAST BLOOD. The fifth instalment of the franchise should see the star back on writing/directing duties. What it will involve has yet to be announced, though I’m guessing a steaming jungle, a foreign enemy and a sweaty bandanna will all feature prominently. Stallone has made quite an art out of mining nostalgia, successfully reviving the character in 2008 after a twenty year absence, as well as bringing Rocky back to the screen. The resulting box office paved the way for THE EXPENDABLES, though disappointing returns for the third movie may have led him to consider a finale for Rambo sooner rather than later.

A possible template for LAST BLOOD could of course be 1982’s FIRST BLOOD, which is worth seeing if you’re only aware of the overblown patriotic antics of later RAMBOs. A surprisingly decent cat and mouse action thriller set in the American wilderness, Stallone could do far worse than return the tortured killing machine to his domestic roots. I can’t say I’m wild about the title, though apparently this was used for a Flash game. Hopefully that won’t inform the tone of this new offering from Millennium Films.
