Charlie Hunnam Reveals Truth Behind ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Exit

Charlie Hunnam

Sons Of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam has finally revealed as to why he dropped out of the upcoming FIFTY SHADES OF GREY movie adaptation, two months after news broke that he landed the massive role of billionaire Christian Grey in the Sam Taylor-Johnson directed movie. Hunnam was replaced by Jamie Dornan after dropping out at the eleventh hour. There were all number of rumours about his sudden departure at the time, but the truth is that the young Newcastle born actor was seemingly burning himself out and had ‘something of a nervous breakdown’ at the time.

“I wouldn’t have signed up in the first place if I didn’t want to do it,” he said. “It was a really, really difficult time in my life.”

He revealed all to Moviefone.

“I was going to finish ‘Sons’ at like 11 p.m. Friday night, get on the plane Saturday morning to Vancouver for ‘Fifty,’ missing the whole first week of rehearsal and start shooting Monday morning. And I was going to shoot that film, wrap that on the Wednesday and the following Monday I was going to start shooting ‘Crimson Peak’ in Toronto. I just had like … frankly, something of a nervous breakdown.”

“I just said, ‘I can’t … I can’t …,'” he added. “To fail on such a grand scale – because ‘Fifty’s going to be massive, it’s going to be huge. I really didn’t want to fail on such a grand scale and I just couldn’t transition from Jax Teller to Christian Grey in 48 hours. I bit off more than I could chew and it was painful. I loved the character and I wanted to do it.”

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY will hit cinemas around the world on Valentine’s Day 2015, while Hunnam, who is scaling the heights of Hollywood anyway, has the likes of Guillermo del Toro’s CRIMSON PEAK and Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur movie around the corner. Not bad for an actor who started his career with loose appearances in the popular TV show Byker Grove.
