The prospect of a movie set on Mars starring Matt Damon and helmed by Ridley Scott is so mouthwatering it makes a honeydew melon look like Moon rocks. But who will offer support to Damon’s all-American astronaut as he tries to keep himself alive in a perilous alien environment for THE MARTIAN? Well, if reports are to be believed Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig are about to sign up to join him on his space-bound journey, which is based on the novel by Andy Weir.
Though the former has dramatic credentials that go into orbit it’s the idea of Scott working with the latter that has me intrigued. The writer/star of BRIDESMAIDS is no stranger to straight acting (appearing in ALL GOOD THINGS for example) but this project could put her on a whole other level. While the source identifies Chastain as the likelier candidate to take part, Wiig throws quite the curveball into the mix. It isn’t clear whether these actresses will be suiting up for planetfall or weeping from the sidelines for the Fox picture. But if I was going to be trapped in a capsule with someone I’d rather they were funny.
