He gave Holmesian England a kick up the architecture, but for his next film Guy Ritchie is venturing even further back into medieval times. With Idris Elba signed to the as-yet-untitled sword and sorcery project, he’ll be led in the quest by rising star Charlie Hunnam, who has been announced as Arthur to Elba’s Merlin-style mentor. Warner Bros/Village Roadshow are supplying the groats. Details are sketchy, but expect a fair amount of punching from a group of rambunctious Cockney knights.
The story of Arthur, his men, his lovers and his association with magic has spanned various media, from the inoffensive BBC series Merlin to the over-conceptualized KING ARTHUR movie of a decade ago. It’s a tale that requires a damsel and reportedly Elizabeth Olsen is in the frame, most likely for Guinevere. Joby Harold is on parchment duties. Akiva Goldsman and Tory Tunnell are planning the pilgrimage. By which I mean they’re writing and producing respectively.
Ritchie’s version of King Arthur is slated to open in two years’ time.
