‘Shutter Island’ Prequel ‘Ashecliffe’ Locked Up With Scorsese On HBO

Leonardo Di Caprio Shutter Island

It started as a novel by Dennis Lehane and became an overheated tale of menace on the big screen starring Leonardo DiCaprio. HBO clearly couldn’t get enough of the concept as they are bringing SHUTTER ISLAND to the small screen in the shape of a TV prequel called Ashecliffe. And to show they’re not messing around Lehane has been hired to write the pilot with none other than the movie’s director Martin Scorsese returning to line the lens.

The original plot saw a US Marshal investigate a remote facility for the criminally insane, in the process losing some of his own marbles as reality and fantasy became blurred. It made an entertaining if heavy-going film but how will the concept translate to a multi-episode format? Lehane hopefully has some aces up his sleeve by way of an origin story and an increasingly TV-friendly Scorsese should deliver on the visual front. He also has a music industry drama on the way (co-produced with Mick Jagger) so while his Boardwalk Empire is coming to a close, the network must be rubbing their hands at the prospect of an ongoing collaboration with this master of genre. More details as they are (if you’ll pardon the expression) released.
