With PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES making an early 2014 debut instead of the usual Halloween release, it looks as though there’s an open market for simple but effective horror. Universal are certainly hoping that their OUIJA is the film to fill such a slot. Based on the popular ghost summoning device that is sold in the US as a child’s toy under the Parker Brothers banner, the same people responsible for Monopoly and Cluedo, Ouija boards have developed an infamous reputation with connections to the occult and Satanists. More sceptical folk see it as a game in which kids try and frighten each other by pushing the pieces around and creating messages from ghosts and ghouls.
Universal are taking it the direct horror route as this preview clearly shows. There’s plenty of unsettling imagery, but will there be enough plot and character to be truly involving? The PG-13 rating means that the film won’t be able to rely to heavily on gore, which will hopefully be a good thing.
OUIJA is released in the US on 24th October and in the UK on 31st October. It stars Olivia Cooke, Ana Coto, Daren Kagasoff, Bianca A. Santos, Douglas Smith, and Lin Shaye.
