Recent reports of HALLOWEEN – THE NEXT CHAPTER turned out to be false. However producers have used the opportunity to go on Facebook and clarify that although a follow up to Rob Zombie’s rebooted franchise is as redundant as a drawer full of rusty knives, the team at Dimension fully intend to revive iconic slasher Michael Myers for an eleventh picture:
We’ve been getting a lot of e-mails/tweets/Facebook messages lately about a project called Halloween: The Next Chapter. It seems that’s the latest buzz surrounding the next Halloween film and again it’s just not true. As we stated before, a new installment of Halloween is indeed in on track and moving forward and we are currently developing a script, to finally bring Michael back to the theaters!
For those who’ve been hiding in a wardrobe over the past thirty years, Myers is the ultimate problem child, donning a creepy mask (allegedly an adaptation of William Shatner’s face) for various killing sprees on October 31st. The original series started with John Carpenter’s influential opener, leading to eight sequels, THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS (number six) being the last film of star Donald Pleasence. The third part SEASON OF THE WITCH was intended to usher in a range of standalone stories, but fans didn’t take to the bizarre story of an Irishman’s attempt to take over the world via novelty items. Zombie was brought in to resurrect the monster with two movies and Malcolm McDowell took over Pleasence’s role as Michael’s haunted pursuer Dr Loomis.
If the studio really wanted to get my attention they might cast Shatner himself as Myers. Aside from that, I can’t see how a character who’s had more angles explored than an all-nighter at a draughtsmans convention can be reintroduced in an interesting way. Still, as long as he’s slicing his way through a succession of annoying characters, Michael should bring a splash of dark joy to the world when the project finally gets before cameras.
