James Gunn Updates On ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Sequel – Reveals More About Star Lord’s Father

2017 might seem like a long way off but director James Gunn is already hard at work on the sequel to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Whilst speaking to Empire about the film he took time-out to tease what the future might hold for the Sex Pistols of the Marvel universe. The top of the to-write list? The identity of Star Lord AKA Peter Quills father:

“I’ve got the basic story for the sequel worked out. I’ve thought a lot about where these characters are going and where they came from, things we’ve gotta find out. There has been a lot of world building we’ve done that we get to play with in the second movie. There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is, and things like that, between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out and I worked it out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.”

Whilst readers of the comics will know this man as J’son of Spartax, Gunn has confirmed that the film will go in a different location saying:

“It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much.”

When probed for more information on the development of the second film Gunn shared that the story is very much in the infant stages at the moment but he is very much looking forwards to getting stuck in.

“Well, you know, there are general ideas for what the sequel is and where it goes and who’s involved and what happens and what we find out about our characters. So it’s very general and that could change. Sometimes you have ideas and you write them down and they’re too convoluted on paper and it’s too many ideas for one thing or it’s not enough ideas or whatever and so that could easily change, but I know a lot about who these characters are and where they came from and where they’re going. I’m excited by the possibility of creating a sequel because we had to do a lot of setup in this movie and with a sequel we don’t have to do that setup which will make it so much easier for me.”

He also commented on whether we can expect to see Josh Brolin’s Thanos to make an appearance. Given that we know that Brolin’s character will feature in at least 2-3 more Marvel movies and given his direct link to the Guardians we believed that he would be a shoe-in for an appearance in the next film, Gunn though may have other ideas:

“I will say that I do not feel beholden to having to use Thanos in Guardians 2. He will show up if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if he is not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos.”

So just who could the team be facing? Gunn teased that Thanos has many more children out there, might one of them step in to try and thwart the newly formed group?

“He’s got some other kids out there. He’s got to look after them. Nebula’s probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like…”

If you haven’t yet seen GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY we strongly advise that you go check it out. If you’ve already seen it why not go again – see if you can spot that ‘new’ character in the end credit sting any earlier. We went for a third time this weekend and managed to spy them and a whole host of other Easter eggs.

So, as I thought, it IS Yondu?

I’m not sure I’d agree that he is ‘an angel comprised of pure light’ but it would be a bit of twist. Plus on Yondu’s death as his son Quill would inherit that whistle dagger thing – that was awesome.
