We’ve just reported the absolutely insane news that the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES film from Jonathan Liebesman has managed to take a huge $65 million in US cinemas alone this weekend, so now we report the inevitable follow-on news in that a sequel to the flick has just been officially given the greenlight over at Paramount. The film is set for US cinemas on June 3rd, 2016.
Adam Goodman, President of Paramount’s Film Group told Deadline:
“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”
The site reports that Michael Bay will be back to produce the sequel, but there’s no news on Liebesman as yet.
The first film has opened in some foreign territories, and is performing well, but it’s not set to hit the UK until October, just in time for that all important half-term break, one in which I’m sure we’ll see kids flocking to the multiplex to get a glimpse of their new heroes-in-a-half-shell.
