BOYHOOD director, Richard Linklater has theorised about how the film could continue in a similar vein.
The award winning film follows Mason (Ellar Coltrane) from the age of six to eighteen, but in a particularly innovative way. Linklater started filming in 2002 and added footage over a twelve year period, using the same actors. Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke and Lorelei Linklater also star as Mason’s family. BOYHOOD has been a firm favourite this year with critics and audiences – perhaps helped by its smart and quirky premise.
So surely he could keep on rolling the camera for another twelve years? And another?
When posed the question in a recent interview, Linklater responded in playful fashion.
“Wouldn’t it be great if Mason left college, got on a train and met this girl in Europe…”
Of course he’s talking about his 1995 romantic drama, BEFORE SUNRISE, also starring Ethan Hawke. The actor plays Jesse, an American who meets a young French woman (Julie Delpy) and spends a night wandering the streets of Paris with her.
Très chic and postmodern!
Claire Joanne Huxham comes from the south-west, where the cider flows free and the air smells of manure. She teaches A-level English by day and fights crime by night. When not doing either of these things she can usually be found polishing her Star Trek DVD boxsets. And when she can actually be bothered she writes fiction and poetry that pops up on the web and in print. Her favourite film in the whole world, ever, is BLADE RUNNER.
