Female Fronted ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off For Sony

Black Cat

Sony take another step in revitalising their Spider-Man franchise and challenging Marvel’s universe by announcing a female lead spin-off from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. Sony have already announced that Spider-Man is on hiatus until 2018, with the villain focused THE SINISTER SIX hitting cinemas in 2016, but they’ve now added to this with a spin-off in 2017 which will cast a female in the lead. There is no clarification on which character will be leading said spin-off, but it can be assumed that Black Cat is a frontrunner due to her alter ego, Felicia Hardy, appearing in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 portrayed by Felicity Jones. Other characters could include Spider-Woman, although would we really want Spider-Man and Spider-Woman on the go? Especially when a Venom solo outing may also be on the cards!

This spin-off would be the first major female led comic-book hero film (we’re not counting CATWOMAN or SUPERGIRL), with Marvel’s Black Widow and DC’s Wonder Woman on supporting duties for their big burly penis owning counterparts. It would be quite a bold step for Sony, who already shocked revealing the super-villain team up would be its own film rather than part of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3. At the same time though, it does smell a bit of desperation as they split their franchise into parts to match Marvel’s extensive universe. Then again, bold steps are needed if they want to breathe new life into the rather disappointing Spider-Man reboot.

Lisa Joy  will script the project. Joy wrote for the incredible Pushing Daisies and is set to write HBO’s upcoming adaptation of Westworld along with husband Jonathan Nolan. That pretty much guarantees a Spider-Man and Batman crossover doesn’t it? No matter what, this is the Sony project I’m most excited for. So fingers crossed it all works out well.
