Just when you thought there weren’t any classic fantasy series left to adapt, the studio that brought us HARRY POTTER has announced it is to realize Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders Of Pern novels for the screen. Warner Bros are hoping audiences will take to this long-running saga of hardy warriors and big scaly things with a sci-fi twist. If they do the rewards are many – McCaffrey began the story about the people of the planet Pern in the late Sixties and there have been 22 instalments.
Huge sales in the literary sphere are no guarantee of cinematic success – the spectres of DUNE and ERAGON figure prominently in execs’ nightmares. But if they get it right this is one CGI spectacle that could run and run. Bets have well and truly been hedged with the space opera lovers of STAR WARS and the sorcery fans of LORD OF THE RINGS being catered for all in one place.
No word on cast or crew yet, but we’ll bring you all the developments as they spew forth from the scorched orifice.
