After DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES ruled over the US box-office for two weekends running it was about time someone challenged them for the number one spot. Its competitors were more than worthy but there could only be one winner…
Luc Besson’s latest outing LUCY saw off Brett Ratner’s HERCULES by more than $15 million. LUCY, starring Scarlett Johansson as the telepathic title character, opened in 3,173 cinemas across the country, earning around $44 million. Meanwhile, HERCULES, featuring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as the mythical legend, opened in 3,595 cinemas and raked in $29 million. To add insult to injury, LUCY cost $40 million throughout its production, while her heavily CGI-ed competition cost around $100 million – ouch! You can read our HERCULES review here.
Here’s the US top five from last weekend:
- LUCY – $44 million
- HERCULES – $29 million
- DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES – $16.4 million
- THE PURGE: ANARCHY – $9.9 million
- PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE – $9.3 million
With the upcoming and eagerly awaited release of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY I think I know who will reach #1 this weekend.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
