With a Yo Ho Ho and a barrel of luck…? Despite some potentially voyage-scuppering difficulties it appears Disney are crossing their fingers and hoping the next few months will iron out any kinks (and no I’m not talking about Jack Sparrow’s predilections) in the fifth instalment of the POTC franchise. A date of July 7th 2017 has been announced for DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, reportedly to give writer Jeff Nathanson room to breathe as he cranks out the pages.
Nathanson isn’t a bad choice to bring us fresh adventures for Johnny Depp and company. He worked on INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, so if he can navigate the wrangling between Steven Spielberg and George Lucas he should be fine scripting a rattling good yarn for a few sea-bound scallywags. Although 2011’s ON STRANGER TIDES took the peculiar route of being adapted from a non-PIRATES novel, it had an advantage over the protracted and pretentious excesses of the original sequels, so something in that vein would do nicely.
Whether Norwegians Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will still be sharing a director’s deckchair remains to be seen. They helmed BANDIDAS featuring a certain Penelope Cruz, so her character could well be making a return to the barnacle-encrusted fold. As long as Depp and Geoffrey Rush are present and correct the studio should be buckle-deep in plunder in two Summers’ time.
