Since making the wise and profitable move of returning to the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise, Vin Diesel has re-established a foothold on the box office following the disappointments of THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK and, most notoriously, BABYLON A.D. The third lower key RIDDICK instalment was played exactly right and with an upcoming voice role in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Diesel is now in a position to branch out a bit. Could he fumble the ball again or might the dice tumble in his favour?
THE LAST WITCH HUNTER is a high profile project that could answer that question. Already featuring the pumped-up, Droopy-esque one and rising star Rose Leslie (Game Of Thrones, Utopia), the movie has added Michael Caine to the Satanic antics, or “Satantics” if you will. Details on Caine’s role are sketchy, but he will join Diesel’s immortal crone crusher in a fight to prevent the spread of a witch-orchestrated plague in New York. There’s the Caine of THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy and then there’s the Caine of JAWS THE REVENGE and SHADOW RUN, so it’ll be interesting to see whether he’s been lured by a meaty part or a massive paycheque. A long list of writers suggests the latter, but with the combination of talent on offer the film should at least be entertaining.
Directed by Breck Eisner (SAHARA), THE LAST WITCH HUNTER is getting released by Lionsgate via Summit Entertainment.
