Two J.R.R. Tolkien Biopics In Development

TOLKIEN

In terms of cultural impact and influence, there are not many bigger writers than J.R.R. Tolkien and we’re also aware of the struggles that he had to produce those magnificent novels after experiencing the horrific realities of World War I and II.

There have been rumours of films being developed for a while and now it seems that two will be out there with one very specifically exploring his life, times and friendship with another classic author; C.S. Lewis.

Chernin Entertainment & Fox Searchlight have been backing TOLKIEN with a script from David Gleeson and now Attractive Films are behind TOLKIEN & LEWIS, which is to be (unexpectedly) directed by THE EXPENDABLES 2 helmer Simon West, who also did CON AIR, and although we see the War/Action element, unless it’s done right I don’t think anyone want that kind of film about Tolkien’s turbulent life.

This latter movie would focus on the relationship between the LORD OF THE RINGS scribe and C.S. Lewis. Interestingly, the Catholic Tolkien converted Lewis to his faith, who was formerly agnostic. As they encouraged and pushed each other in their work, the writers’ friendship was stretched among feelings of jealously and paranoia. As a character piece, it’s a hell of a massive subject and full of possibility.

We’ll keep you up-to-date with developments, what would you want to see from either story?
