Last night we got the chance to chat on the phone, across time zones, with Michael Rooker. Most of you will know him as Merle Dixon on The Walking Dead whilst the older amongst you will know him as Rowdy Burns from Tom Cruise / Tony Scott vehicle, DAYS OF THUNDER. We talked with the actor for almost an hour about all manor of things from video games to MALLRATS. The full interview will be up over the next few days, but we felt it only right to share his reaction to the reason we were chatting in the first place GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.
Rooker, a close friend of the film’s director James Gunn, is one of the lucky people that has already seen the highly anticipated summer phenomena GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. In the film Rooker plays Yondu (who got his own poster yesterday), a blue alien who has raised Chris Pratt’s Star Lord from a young boy, and shares a complicated parental relationship with the character. When in the company of someone who has seen a film like this is would be rude to not get their opinion. Here’s what he had to say:
“Dude I saw it last week, I saw the absolute finished, polished out to the fans version. I said to someone the other day I’m usually very conservative when it comes to what I think the films going to do or how it’s going to do but I’m not being conservative here when I say GUARDIANS is the most fun, exciting, cool piece that I’ve ever been involved with. I think the fans are going to go absolutely ape-shit over it. If that’s a term I could use I think they’re just going to love it, they’re going to dig it so much, I know I did. I walked away with a big grin on my face it was very cool.
It’s hard to judge a film by the trailer, you can’t judge this movie by the trailer because I’ve gotta tell ya the movie’s way waaaaaay better than the trailer. The trailer is just a little tiny bit of pieces that you know bits and pieces of the movie; from the beginning, the end, just little all over the place and they try to mix that all together to make a trailer that’s entertaining and that’s very cool and I think they accomplished that but the movie is so much more cooler. So much more in depth it’s one of these kinds of movies that you’re going to want to see more than once, twice, it’s quite rich and rewarding.”
So prepare to go ‘ape-shit’ readers, and get saving those pennies as you’re going to need them for all the extra viewings.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is released 31st July and stars Michael Rooker, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.
