If you thought the new POWER RANGERS reboot was going to be the kind of movie kids dragged their parents to see, you may want to guess again. Lionsgate and Saban Brands have upped their game by hiring an impressive trio of writers to get the garishly-spandexed show back on the road. Not only have X-MEN: FIRST CLASS’s Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz been brought aboard, but writer/superproducer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS) is on exec duties, as well as creating the story with Miller and Stentz.
The end result should be a far cry from the frantic Saturday morning goings-on of the original series, that combined teeny bopper martial arts action with stock footage from Japan’s Super Sentai show. A big question will be how a group who are used to scribing for the likes of STAR TREK and THOR can lend weight to this project without changing it too much from the brand that is loved across the world. Speaking for myself I found Power Rangers to be a brain-boiling experience that frequently bordered on incoherence, though I hardly think that’s going to be the remit over at Production HQ. And a gritty, angst-ridden take on the concept? I can’t see that happening either.
