Kate Mara Distances ‘Fantastic Four’ From Comic Books

Kate Mara

Star of House Of Cards and new Sue Storm Kate Mara has given the clearest indication yet that FANTASTIC FOUR will diverge from its colourful source material. The casting raised a few eyebrows, from Jamie Bell as The Thing to Michael B.Jordan as the first black Human Torch. Now it seems future STAR WARS director Josh Trank is using the original books as a springboard to a proper reimagining. ComicBookMovie.com went above and beyond to translate an interview with Mara that appeared in Esquire Latinoamerica, bravely bypassing the scantily-clad pictures and concentrating on the words instead:

I was going to (read comic books) for this movie but the director said it wasn’t necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn’t do it because the plot won’t be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions.

This may surprise some as the film was reportedly inspired by the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic. Could Trank be throwing the book out the window? Not only that, but the characters are also going to be more grounded.  In as much as a man with the consistency of chewing gum and a big dude made of rocks can be…

We are also trying to create a new way of seeing these superheroes, I’m focusing on making her (Susan Storm) as real as possible.

While personally I can’t see Trank branching out too wildly from what’s gone before (for one thing the studio would surely veto anything that  annoys fans too much), this certainly places the emphasis away from the previous films, which abounded in bright spandex and lame gags. Tales of filmmakers who really had no grasp of what it was they were making (JJ Abram’s nixed interpretation of Superman coming to mind) are legendary, but I’d say the whole operation is now far too slick for anything radical in terms of the classics. All in all, it should make for an intriguing watch when the movie is released in June 2015.
