The BBC had a bit of a surprise for viewers of the World Cup Final on Saturday night, with the premiere of our first proper look at Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor Who during the half time interval.
Buckle up and check it out below…
Following a couple of teasers, this was a full-blown whistle-stop tour through the sights and sounds of the show’s eighth series, revealing bizarrely-noggined creatures, cyborgs, a rampaging dinosaur and an exploding TARDIS console. Central to all this is Capaldi himself, gaunt and unsettling, accompanied by a juddering score. The tone of this run appears to be of the edgier variety as Clara struggles to work out exactly “who” she’s travelling with following the departure of lovely, approachable Matt Smith.
It’s a triumphant moment for the production team following some high profile embarrassments this month. Scripts for the new episodes were leaked and then to make matters worse a rough cut of opener Deep Breath has been doing the rounds on the internet. As balls ups go they don’t come much bigger, but Whovians are a hardy bunch and they and millions of others will surely be tuning in on the 23rd August to see how the new Time Lord fares.
