William Friedkin To Direct ‘True Detective’ Season 2?

William Friedkin

With a filmography that includes THE FRENCH CONNECTION and TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA, director William Friedkin knows his way around hard-boiled crime drama. So it will certainly whet True Detective fans’ appetite to know he is enthusiastic about helming the second season, having chatted to creator Nic Pizzolatto on the subject. In an interview for Indiewire Friedkin made no bones about his admiration for the show:

I am considering it…. I like this writer (Pizzolatto) very much. I’ve met him, and he’s the real deal as far as I’m concerned… I can’t say much more at this time… I like him, I like the direction he’s taking with this.

The controversial shot-caller worked with first season star Matthew McConaughey on KILLER JOE and it wouldn’t surprise me if the actor had also had a word in Friedkin’s ear. Though TD 2 focuses on new characters and situations, the first was distinctive in that one director oversaw the entire run. Taking the reins from Cary Joji Fukunaga must surely be a tempting prospect and there’s also a TV adaptation of TO LIVE AND DIE… in the offing to give the veteran helmer a taste for the small screen. Though his output can be described as patchy at best, a solid stint on one of the world’s most talked-about programmes could be just the challenge he’s been looking for.
