The Weinstein Brothers Pass On ‘Clerks III’

They shelled out the cash and distributed the first two movies in Kevin Smith’s CLERKS series, but it looks like Bob and Harvey Weinstein are not going to stump up the cash to make CLERKS III. In the 20th anniversary year of the original movie’s release, Smith told the folks over at Screen Daily that the two Hollywood uber-moguls have officially passed.

“[The Weinsteins] passed. I went in with a $6m budget and they were, like, ‘Oh no Kevin, this is too high’. Bob offered us distribution but they weren’t going to finance it,”
That really sucks because, after all, the first two movies have been hugely popular, and indeed commercially successful. CLERKS II made around $24 million from a modest $5 million budget. So, where will Smith take the movie now? He provided an update via Twitter a little earlier.

We’re hopeful.
