From SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, to YOU’VE GOT MAIL and JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have made a perfect movie duo for many years but it has, of course, been a while since they’ve hit the big screen together.
This one is a little different though as ITHACA will be Meg Ryan’s directorial debut with Hanks production company Playtone backing her. That’s not to say there won’t be a cameo for Hanks though and although this isn’t something he always does, it seems that some form of reunion is definitely on and for the fourth time.
The film is based on the 1943 novel by William Saroyan called The Human Comedy. It’s a World War II saga that’s sold as a ‘coming of age’ drama about life on the front line, something that Hanks definitely has connects to and would slot into comfortably. The links don’t stop there either as the script is by Erik Jendresen, a man who worked with the great Hanks on the impressive Band Of Brothers.
ITHACA takes place in California’s San Joaquin Valley and tells the tales of Home Macauley, a 14-year-old boy who’s older brother has gone off to fight in WWII. It leaves him behind to care for his mother, sister and younger brother and then the consequences of war (we believe) would have a rippling affect on him and his family forever.
We’ll bring you more news as we hear it, a great character-led story to begin with and with these two involved we’d expect an emotional impact and something to remember. The film also stars Sam Shepard, Melanie Griffith and Jack Quaid with shooting set to start next month in the States.
