Matrix Creators’ ‘Sense8’ Unveiled With Doctor Who’s Freema Agyeman

Freema Agyeman

With the focus on Karen Gillan and her meteoric rise, it’s easy to forget there’s another former Doctor Who companion doing well for herself the other side of the pond. Known for playing Martha Jones alongside David Tennant’s Tenth (or Eleventh and Twelfth depending on “Who” you speak to) Doctor, actress Freema Agyeman went on to star in Law & Order: UK before appearing in Sex & The City prequel The Carrie Diaries. That fell off the runway pretty quick, but her next project looks like it has legs.

Boasting a combined showrunner pedigree of MATRIX creators Andy and Lana Wachowksi and BABYLON 5’s J. Michael Straczynski, international sci-fi drama SENSE8 will be shown on Netflix. Agyeman isn’t the only cult TV alumnus in the mix, with the series also featuring Lost‘s Naveen Andrews and Stargate: Universe‘s Brian J.Smith, not to mention movie star Daryl Hannah. Details of the ambitious storyline have just been revealed by Straczynski:

The series follows eight characters around the world who, in the aftermath of a tragic death, find themselves linked to each other mentally and emotionally… They can not only see and talk to each other as though they were in the same place, they have access to each other’s deepest secrets. Not only must they figure out what happened and why and what it means for the future of humanity, they must do so while being hunted by an organization out to capture, kill or vivisect them.

Sounds like a variation on the recently-rebooted-and-canned version of The Tomorrow People.  But with an interesting mix of players and a solid creative team with experience of long-running shows this could prove a hit for the ever-expanding Netflix empire.
