*PLEASE NOTE – THIS POST CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE MUSICAL INTO THE WOODS, IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED, PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE*

Disney’s upcoming adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s INTO THE WOODS has had a bit of a mixed reaction, but one thing has cropped up a bit of a debate – whether some of the infamous plot points will be kept in. Lucky for us, Sondheim revealed all (literally) at a recent event talking to high school theatre teachers about staging their own musical.

One teacher had revealed that he had major concerns about staging the musical, mainly down to the relationship between Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, in which Sondheim replied “Well, you’ll be happy to know that Disney had the same objection.”

So no relationship between Little Red and the Wolf, what else has been changed? Quite a lot, according to Sondheim. He told the audience:

“You will find in the movie that Rapunzel does not get killed, and the prince does not sleep with the Baker’s Wife…You know, if I were a Disney executive I probably would say the same thing.”

But if the Prince doesn’t sleep with the Baker’s Wife, what happens to the song “Any Moment” one of the more popular songs in the musical?

“The song is cut…I’m sorry, I should say, it’s ‘probably’ cut.”

Ouch indeed.

Rob Marshall will direct the Disney’s upcoming adaptation of INTO THE WOODS, and has an all star cast including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt,  James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Frances De La Tour, and Simon Russell Beale. It is set to be released Christmas Day 2014 in the US and 9th January 2015 in the UK.
