Granted they were written by GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’s James Gunn, but the live action SCOOBY DOO movies could diplomatically be described as an acquired taste. While there were a fair amount of self referential antics (I’m thinking in particular of the treatment of Scrappy Doo) the basic flaw was the title character. Why bother employing a group of perfectly decent actors and then saddle them with a CGI canine? They might as well have made the whole shebang an animated project. But with box office returns healthier than a Scooby Snack factory next to Battersea Dogs Home it was only a matter of time before Warner Bros fired up the Mystery Machine once again. Aside from the original Raja “THE SMURFS” Gosnell efforts there were two direct-to-DVD films with Frank Welker reprising his voice role from the cartoons.
With news of Casey Kasem’s passing the timing could have been better, but the studio have announced the hiring of one Randall Green to yank the choke chain and bring everyone’s favourite scaredy cat who isn’t a cat back to Movieland. Casting is still to be decided, but would it really be so bad to have Bryan Cranston as an ageing Shaggy?
