Gosling And Crowe Are ‘The Nice Guys’?

Ryan Gosling & Russell Crowe

If you read that producer Joel Silver (NON-STOP) and writer/director Shane Black (LETHAL WEAPON) are wanting to make a movie about dirty deeds in 1970s LA, you’d expect a whopping chunk of action man casting. Both made their names in the testosterone-heavy ’80s and while stars such  as Sylvester Stallone are tongue-in-cheeking all the way to the bank in films like THE EXPENDABLES, that generation are arguably getting on in years. After some time out of the game, Black has been steadily building a solid reputation for high concept fare such as KISS KISS BANG BANG and IRON MAN 3. And just as the former showcased the unexpected combo of Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr, so the wishlist for THE NICE GUYS creates similar surprise with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling being courted.

Both actors have enough brooding intensity to fill a movie apiece – together they could melt the faces of the front few rows! Co-written by Black and Anthony Bagarozzi, the plot sounds like CHINATOWN with a dash of THE BIG LEBOWSKI as two washed-up hard men become enmeshed in an environmentally-themed conspiracy around the supposed disappearance of a porn star. It’s unclear who Black wants for the private eye and fistman respectively, but either star has the chops to take either. Crowe may ultimately be ruled out due to publicity for his directing debut THE WATER DIVINER. Meanwhile, Gosling is moving on from his critically-mauled LOST RIVER by working with another lensing maverick, Terrence Malick.

If it works out, this could be quite the action/acting fest.  We at THN will keep you abreast of the developments.
