Kristen Wiig Reteams With ‘Bridesmaids’ Writer For Directorial Debut

Kristen Wiig & Annie Mumolo

Those hoping for BRIDESMAIDS 2 will be disappointed but reasonably satisfied to learn Kristen Wiig is co-writing another script with Annie Mumolo, this time for her first movie in the helmer’s chair. The pair will play, appropriately enough, best friends and I’m placing a safe bet this will involve them getting into all manner of farcical scrapes. If you’re looking for a flavour of the partnership, Mumolo was the paranoid plane passenger a pre-whacked-out Wiig sat next to in their previous wedding-themed hit.

Mumolo’s latest screenplay is to be directed by a more mercurial presence, David O Russell. It focuses on the true story of Joy Mangano, inventor of the Miracle Mop, to be played by Jennifer Lawrence. Wiig has been flexing her dramatic muscles of late in movies like HATESHIP, LOVESHIP and THE SKELETON TWINS, so it’ll be good to see her return to her comedic roots for her first project as director.
