CUBAN FURY is based around an original idea from Nick Frost, which follows the life of 30-something Bruce Garrett (Frost) who was once a child prodigy at Salsa but lost his passion for the dance after a rather horrible incident with older kids who took a dislike to his style. After he’s basically bullied out of his love for Salsa, his life flips forward 25 years and he’s working for an engineering company and lost his vibrancy for life.

When new boss Julia Matthews (Rashida Jones) joins the company that Garrett works for, he accidentally finds out that she’s dancing salsa in her spare time and his fire is relit and he’s inspired to revisit the passion of his youth. Bruce doesn’t have it all his own way though, as creepy co-colleague Drew (Chris O’Dowd) thinks he has a way with the ladies and is also out to steal Julia from under the nose before he’s even had a chance.

CUBAN FURY is a celebration not just of the underdog, but those who feel undervalued and have lost track of what they really want from their lives. Frost’s Bruce Garrett is that steady soul who knows he could have done something different with his existence but somewhere feels that he’s not done yet. Nick Frost proves here that he’s a fine leading man, it’s hard not to compare with Simon Pegg’s earlier roles in the likes of RUN, FATBOY, RUN but that’s more due to the narrative rather than acting styles.

There’s also a pretty tremendous ensemble cast here with superb accompaniment from the aforementioned Chris O’Dowd as seedy co-worker Drew. He’s one of those characters who pretends to be your friend but is in fact the absolute office arse, Frost and O’Dowd’s ‘dance-off’ scene is one to truly behold and you can see how America has taken to his visual comedy by storm.  There’s the ever-remarkable Olivia Colman who shines as Bruce’s sister Sam. She used to dance with him when they were younger and here she takes on an inspiring role as his catalyst towards something better.

Kayvan Novak also makes a massive impact as the super-camp bizarre, yet brilliant Bejan. His character just loves to dance and is exactly what he is, there’s no denying his guidance as he helps picks up Bruce and (almost literally) kicks him towards his hopeful destiny. There are also special mentions for a minor, but central role for Ian McShane, and upcoming starlet Alexandra Roach who shines as Helen.

CUBAN FURY is a sensual and passion portrayal of salsa dancing wrapped up in a heartfelt-film with a lot of fun, hope and inspiration. It’s also very funny and keeps that burning fire within to remind you that whoever you are, you can do something better if you want to. Now, go get it!
