Comedian, writer and actor Rik Mayall passed away earlier this morning, according to a statement that has just been released by his management. Mayall, who found fame on British television in the TV series The Young Ones and Bottom, died on Monday at the age of just 56, though the cause of death is not yet known.
His management released a statement which read:
“We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Rik Mayall who passed away this morning.
“We will be issuing a further statement in the fullness of time.”
Mayall not only defined a generation on television, also appearing in Blackadder and The New Statesmen, but also starred in a few cult movies, including DROP DEAD FRED in 1991 opposite Phoebe Cates, and GUEST HOUSE PARADISO alongside his writing partner and friend Adrian Edmondson. The film also starred a young Simon Pegg in one of his earliest roles and future SHAUN OF THE DEAD co-star Bill Nighy.
Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. Rest In Peace Rik.
