It was originally going to be a movie in 2004 with Keira Knightley and Jude Law before hitting the financial skids. A decade later, Deborah Moggach’s 1999 novel TULIP FEVER is being brought to the big screen with a raft of eminent names attached. Dame Judi Dench has been announced in a major role and her previous association with Moggach (THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL) may have played a part in getting the project off the ground. She will join Christoph Waltz (THE ZERO THEOREM) and Holliday Grainger (The Borgias) as central character/17th century tulip magnate Cornelius Sandvoort and his young bride.
TULIP FEVER has a good mix of passionate shenanigans and historical detail, so a prestige cast and an illustrious screenwriter (though Stoppard has a patchy history with screenplays from BRAZIL to THE GOLDEN COMPASS) guarantees at least a smidgen of watchability. MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM director Justin Chadwick has been handed helming duties. The additional casting of THE HANGOVER’s Zach Galifianakis certainly intrigues!
