Sheffield Doc/Fest 2014 Preview

Sheffield Doc Fest

Tomorrow sees the opening day of Sheffield Doc/Fest – the 21st year of the international documentary festival. THN will be in Sheffield covering some of this year’s most anticipated documentaries over the next week, but here’s a sneak peek at our pick of the crop.

1) PULP: A FILM ABOUT LIFE, DEATH AND SUPERMARKETS

Pulp Quad ART 3 Visual

It’s the European Premiere of the film that documents Pulp’s farewell gig in their home town in Sheffield and we’re expecting pink carpets, bright lights and a night to remember. The charming documentary will take you back to the by-gone era of Britpop and all that came with it; the sleaze, the sex and of course the city: Sheffield. You can check out our 5* review for yourself; are you ready to party like it’s 1995?

2) HAPPINESS

Happiness

Up next is a screening with a difference. HAPPINESS, from Thomas Balmes, will be screened in a cave in the Peak District with the weather set to give the audience atmosphere akin to the remote part of the world in which the story takes place. Here’s what to expect:

Eight-year old Peyangki’s tiny village in Bhutan is finally getting television. But will it bring happiness? Acclaimed film-maker Thomas Balmes transports us through astounding cinematography to a remote corner of the world on the verge of great change.

Get your waterproofs on guys; we’re going to the caves!

3) BEYOND CLUELESS

Beyond Clueless

If you’re a fan of teen movies you’ll probably know all about BEYOND CLUELESS; which gained full kick starter funding for director Charlie Lyne and premiered at SXSW earlier this year. Narrated by cult teen star Fairuza Balk, get ready for a delve into the archives at over 200 teen movies and an insight into a genre that forever gets a hard time. Only at Doc/Fest – the movie will be screening at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre with pop duo Summer Camp playing the films’ soundtrack live. THN will also be speaking to director Charlie Lyne about all things teen movies so check back for our interview next week.

There’s so much going on at Sheffield Doc/Fest this year including Jon Snow and Sue Perkins in conversation (separately, although now there’s an idea), panels on everything from using your production crew to the race for the documentary Oscar and hundreds of documentaries of all varieties. You can check out the full listings at the official Sheffield Doc/Fest page and make sure you’re following THN on Twitter for our coverage of panels, sessions and screenings galore.

Originally from deep in the London suburbs Vicky is now enjoying the novelty of being able to catch a night bus home from anywhere in the city. Her favourite films are anything John Hughes is involved in, SAY ANYTHING and DEAD POETS SOCIETY. Don't mention the rumour she once served cold tea to Robert Webb and Olivia Coleman.
