Tim Roth will return in a period drama after his role in GRACE OF MONACO by starring in SELMA, a film which recounts the events of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.’s march from Selma to Montgomery. Roth will take the part of George Wallace, a governor who believed in and supported segregation. Wallace would eventually denounce segregation and became “the most influential loser” in U.S. politics after four unsuccessful campaigns to become president.
The cast already includes David Oyelowo as Dr. King and Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon Johnson. If the cast sounds as though it’s a bit too British though, support comes in the form of Cuba Gooding Jr. and Common. Reading up on Wallace, it appears he had a very interesting history himself and perhaps deserves his own film. SELMA has been in production for quite some time now, going back to at least 2010, with the part of Wallace originally going to Robert DeNiro. Director Ava DuVernay’s previous features, I WILL FOLLOW and MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, have been nothing to get excited about, but with a varied career and fascinating subject matter, let’s hope this comes together nicely.
