Doug Liman Confirms Tom Hardy For ‘Splinter Cell’ Movie

Whilst speaking to IGN director Doug Liman has confirmed that Tom Hardy will indeed play Sam Fisher in his SPLINTER CELL film. The director is currently on promoting EDGE OF TOMORROW (which is pretty good) and took the time to share some information about his next project.

The vision for the film based on the popular books and video-games is going to be a younger take on the character. Who better to play Fisher than everyone’s favourite Brit, Tom Hardy?

“I’m working on the script with Tom Hardy. I think we have a great take on how to make an awesome film out of that. Everything about Splinter Cell will be younger. It’s a chance to come up with a new franchise that is fresher and newer and younger, and Tom Hardy is such an incredible actor.”

The history of video-game to screen adaptations is full of ups and downs with very few resembling the games that inspired them. A few films have done well but they very rarely stick to the conventions and story arcs of the game which is a shame when you think about it. It’s not often that a book is adapted and has the whole plot changed, so why do it for a game which essentially has a pre-made plot. Liman shared his thoughts on how close to the game his screen venture will be:

“Some of the tropes of the game will for sure be in the film, but also the fun of that is when you lose them. To strip that stuff away and really make the character have to operate without it.”

This film has been stagnating in production for several years now but hopefully with a director like Liman behind the wheel it won’t be long until we are treated to a further insight into the projects development.
