Just over a week ago news hit that Edgar Wright had officially left Marvel’s ANT-MAN movie, a project that he had been working on since 2006. Since then there’s been all sorts of rumours bouncing around the internet regarding who will replace him, and just yesterday we revealed that it was down to just three A-list helmers; Ruben Fleischer (ZOMBIELAND), Rawson Marshall Thurber (DODGEBALL) and Adam McKay. Since we posted that article, it was revealed that McKay had officially been offered the role (this was sourced from Ain’t It Cool News late yesterday), but now it seems that the STEP BROTHERS direct has pulled himself off the project completely, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Negotiations began with McKay in earnest on Friday but the Anchorman director abruptly decided against taking the job on the film, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The decision is said to be his alone.
That’s all that was said. So, does that mean it’s down to just Fleischer and Thurber? Or will Marvel ship it to someone else? Whatever they do, they must do it quick as the film is still set to kick-off Marvel Phase Three next summer, with a date set in stone for 17th July, 2015. Or, will they put the film back? Either way, this must scupper their plans for the structured releasing for their properties going forward.
What a mess. We’ll keep you informed of future developments.
