Ari Folman’s ‘The Congress’ Gets A Trailer

Best known for the immaculate WALTZ WITH BASHIR, Ari Folman’s latest film once again takes an unfamiliar route with animation. THE CONGRESS premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, and considering this year’s festival is now wrapping up, it’s taken far too long for a release. The fascinating plot sees Robin Wright as herself sell the likeness of her younger self. Part animated, part live action, the film takes a delicate look at aging and more specifically the role of aging actresses in Hollywood.

The trailer looks stunning, especially the animated sequences, and it’s always great to see actors playing skewed versions of themselves. However, Wright hardly looks as though she’s aged in the 27 years since THE PRINCESS BRIDE, which may actually make me less sympathetic to the message, and with recent rolls in MONEYBALL, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and House Of Cards, she’s not exactly aching for work either. Under Folman’s guidance though, I’m sure the message will still hit hard.

THE CONGRESS is released on the 15th August in the UK and on the 29th August in the US. It stars Robin Wright, Harvey Keitel, Jon Hamm, Paul Giamatti, Danny Huston, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Sami Gayle.
