I had no idea about this one, but maybe in the covert world of international intrigue that’s an appropriate response. Recently-decommissioned BBC drama Spooks is getting made into a film, featuring Game Of Thrones star Kit Harington, here seen in full-on action mode. The programme was one of the corporation’s biggest hits, running across 10 series and hiring and jettisoning an array of photogenic spies, including Keeley Hawes (Ashes To Ashes), Rupert Penry-Jones (Whitechapel), Hermione Norris (The Crimson Field) and Richard Armitage (THE HOBBIT).
It’s one thing to have a successful TV product and quite another to pull off a cinematic transfer. While it doesn’t strike me as a great idea to bank on a long-running show having the momentum to hit the big screen just after it’s gone off air, the cast is promising. Series star Peter Firth (LIFEFORCE) returns, joined by Jennifer Ehle (FIFTY SHADES OF GREY) and rising star Tuppence Middleton, who was suitably baffled in the BBC’s recent and unnecessary The Lady Vanishes. Terrorist Adam Qasim escapes from MI5 custody during a routine handover – with head of counterterrorism, Harry Pearce (Firth) blamed. When Pearce disappears one night off a bridge into the Thames, his protégé Will Crombie (Harington) is called in to help uncover a conspiracy which stretches from Vietnam to the Mediterranean.
They’re calling it SPOOKS: THE GREATER GOOD, which seems a bit lame, but maybe they’ll work out a better title by the time the movie is released.
