Big is the operative word when speaking of Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.’ GODZILLA, as it has the biggest international opening of the year so far, beating out Marvel franchise favourites CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, although in fairness those films didn’t have a simultaneous release outside the US. It has now been confirmed that a sequel is already in development. 1998’s GODZILLA, directed by Roland Emmerich, had actually planned to be part of a trilogy, but that film only grossed $379 million worldwide. Gareth Edwards’ current iteration of Toho’s classic monster has already made a third of that and could double that take during its theatrical run.
It’s a bit too early to claim success just yet though, as GODZILLA will face stiff competition in its second week due to the release of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST the 7th film in the ongoing series which unites the casts of the original trilogy as well as the prequel timeline from X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.
With 28 Toho movies to take from, a GODZILLA sequel has plenty of material to work with. Fans such as myself will no doubt be crossing fingers for some other classic monsters to get in on the action, but Edwards may very well have more monsters of his own up his sleeve. I loved GODZILLA, and hope a sequel manages to give us a film that’s just as memorable and destructive.
