Jane Horrocks To Star In ‘East is East’ Theatre Production

East is East Jane Horrocks

After the announcement that Gina McKee will join Martin Freeman in Richard III, it has now been revealed that Jane Horrocks will take centre stage for the other Trafalgar Transformed production of East is East. Horrocks will be joined on stage by award-winning playwright Ayub Khan Din, who also wrote the play and had this to say:

“East is East will always remain a special piece for me because of its autobiographical nature and the fact that it continues to find relevance with each generation of young people that see it. I look forward to revisiting it with a new company, not just as the writer, but as an actor as well.”

The play, which examines the culture clash faced in northern England in the 1970s, was first staged seventeen years ago and has since been made into a film. It now returns to the London stage.

An hilarious play about growing up in multi-racial England. Pakistani chip-shop owner George Khan is determined to give his children a strict Muslim upbringing against the unforgiving backdrop of 1970s Salford. Household tension reaches breaking point as their long-suffering English mother, Ella (Jane Horrocks), gets caught in the cross fire – her loyalties divided between her marriage and the free will of her children.

Directed by Sam Yates, East is East follows Richard III in Jamie Lloyd’s second season for Trafalgar Transformed and runs from 4 October 2014 to 3 January 2015.
