Look At My S…Sequel! ‘Spring Breakers: The Second Coming’ In The Works

spring-breakers-1

While some loved it, others hated it. But, hey, that’s what the industry’s all about. News has surfaced that SPRING BREAKERS, directed by Harmony Korine, is getting a sequel (of sorts)…but without Harmony at the helm.

Wild Bunch have managed to bag Jonas Akerlund (SMALL APARTMENTS) as director, with a script being penned by living legend Irvine Welsh. By now we’re intrigued, but the predicted story is even more interesting:

The Spring Breakers do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.

The original feature left the girls in a position where we couldn’t really see a sequel planned – most likely Korine’s idea. However, this has been mulled over and it’s been announced that ‘it’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original’.

So SPRING BREAKERS: THE SECOND COMING doesn’t involve the original director, scriptwriter or cast? Fair enough. Maybe having Akerlund and Welsh’s names attached will bring audiences in? Maybe, maybe not. I loved every tongue-in-cheek, tacky, fluorescent-glowing second of it, but when I looked around the screening I was surrounded by some of Southend’s finest MTV reality show wannabes, all under the impression that James Franco’s character was someone to aspire to. Hopefully the marketing strategy this time around will be more accurate.

SPRING BREAKERS: THE SECOND COMING is being pitched at Cannes, so we’ll bring you any news updates that arise.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.

“The Spring Breakers do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.” This is a joke, right? RIGHT…? Oboy, this is gonna stink big time! Also, no Hudgens and Gomez in tight bikinis. I’ll pass.
