He spoke sweet nothings to Scarlett Johansson’s foxy operating system in HER, now the force of nature that is Joaquin Phoenix is to star in Johansson collaborator Woody Allen’s upcoming movie.
As ever with the Allen slate details are non-existent, but the teaming of his quickfire sensibility with Phoenix’s mercurial presence should make this watch-worthy. With many of his recent offerings being ascribed the dreaded “his best film in years” tag, Allen’s output is often viewed with a mixture of hope and scepticism. Also known for his prolific turnover, his next release MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT sounds par for the course as Colin Firth investigates wrongdoing in the Jazz Age South of France, bumping into such notable names as Emma Stone along the way.
A tempting prospect is that Phoenix will be playing a version of Allen himself, a role taken in the past by John Cusack (BULLETS OVER BROADWAY), Kenneth Branagh (CELEBRITY) and arguably most successfully of all Will Ferrell (MELINDA AND MELINDA). As a fan of Woody Allen come rain (CASSANDRA’S DREAM) or shine (VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA) I’m generally happy to wait and see what transpires.
Shooting is said to commence in July.
